Your child missed a Sydney rep team. Here is what comes next.

Missing a Sydney rep team is common and it is not final. Many associations publish something in between, such as development or train-on places, reserves, a Rep Rookies squad, an academy or a second-tier team. Check what your association offers, ask for feedback through the right channel, keep your child playing domestic, and remember trials come round again every year.

The first night is not the night to fix anything

The email arrives, or it does not, and every parent wants to do something straight away. Ring the coach, post in the group chat, look up another association. Do none of it that night. Your child is watching how you react far more closely than they are reading the outcome.

It helps to know the numbers before you read the result as a verdict. Basketball NSW's 2027 rules allow a team to field up to ten players in a game, and Hornsby, Manly and Hills all describe junior rep teams of ten players. Blacktown, for example, says it intends to nominate two teams per age and gender group for 2027.

Associations are also clear that the decision is a judgement made by a panel. Hornsby's 2027 trial guide says its coaches hold a panel discussion after each trial and recommend players for selection, and it urges players who are not selected to keep working on their skills and try again the following year. Hills' selection policy, approved in August 2024, says the selectors' decisions are final and that no announcements are made on the day of trials.

What associations offer players who miss a team

This is the part most families do not know to ask about. Many Sydney associations run something between domestic basketball and a full rep spot, and some offer it during selection itself. The names differ, so here is what the main ones mean.

A development or train-on player trains with a rep team but rarely plays. City of Sydney's 2026 handbook says development players are expected at every training session but are unlikely to play in games. Bulls says its development players are not guaranteed game time but may fill in when a rostered player is unavailable. Norths' 2027 handbook describes reserves, who buy the full uniform and are full members of the program but do not play in the rotation, and separate train on or development places.

A Rep Rookies squad is usually for younger players. At Hills, the Rep Rookies squad is for 2018-born players who were not selected in a Hornets team, with regular training and two carnivals, and 2018-born players cut from the U12 trials can go to the Rookie trial on 1 November 2026. Be careful with the name: at Penrith, Rep Rookies means the entry trials for players who have never represented Penrith.

Some associations field a second-tier team. Camden Valley aims to have one Representative Development Team per junior age division in 2027, where appropriate, with its own coach, playing the Barrengarry Conference and/or other events. Wollondilly enters Barrengarry League teams alongside its Southern Junior League teams. Academies and term programs are the other route, such as Manly's MWBA Academy and Sutherland's Sharks Academy.

Asking for feedback, and asking for it properly

Policies differ, so check before you write. Hills' selection policy, approved in August 2024, says feedback can be requested. Marrickville Spirit's 2027 trial page says that, because of the number of trialists, it is unable to give individual feedback on performance or selection. On the other association pages we read on 9 October 2026, we found no description of a feedback process, so ask the rep coordinator by email rather than assuming one exists.

Use the official channel, not the car park. Norths' 2026 rep handbook asks parents with an issue not to approach the coach in front of players and supporters, and to wait 24 hours before talking to the coach. Hills' handbook asks parents with issues to follow its complaint procedure.

When you write, ask one useful question: what are the two things my child should work on before next year's trials. Hornsby's published criteria are a good guide to what that answer will cover: skill level, game understanding, coachability and a team-first mindset. A forward-looking question is far easier to answer usefully than why was my child not picked.

Selection is not always final on the day

Lists can move. Hornsby's guide says the association may offer representative selection at any point of the trials process. Hills' 2024 selection policy says a development player's status may change to full player if they replace a full player. Camden Valley says players in its development teams may be called up to a rostered spot on a Metro Junior League team at the head coach's discretion.

Be realistic about how far down the list that reaches. Hills' Rep Rookies page answers the question of a mid-season move from the Rookie squad into a rep team with most likely no, and says a development player is usually moved up first.

So if your child has been offered a development, reserve or train-on place, take the offer seriously. It keeps them training in a rep environment, and Bulls describes its development role as a pathway into full positions. Check the time limit, too: Camden Valley gives families 48 hours to respond to an offer, and Norths asks for its acceptance deposit within 48 hours of the final team list.

Before you look for an association that will say yes

Moving to a smaller program is sometimes the right call, but it is a process, not a phone call. Basketball NSW's 2027 rules say a player registered with one association cannot trial with another without an Intent to Trial form, and cannot play for the new association until a clearance is processed. A player may represent only one association in a season.

Transfer caps matter more than most families expect. The rules allow one transferred player per team in the Waratah State Championships and Metro Junior League Divisions 1 and 2, and three in lower divisions. Manly, Hills and Camden Valley each publish a maximum of two transfers per junior age group. There is one quiet advantage to a year out: the rules say a player who did not play rep the previous season, including one who was not selected, does not count toward a team's transfer limit, up to one such player per team.

Then there is the driving. Most of the Sydney rep programs whose pages we read on 9 October 2026 say teams train twice a week, so an association on the other side of Sydney can mean two long round trips on school nights every week. Weigh that against trying again at home next year.

Trials come round every year

The door is annual. Norths says its trials run every year from October to November, and when we checked on 9 October 2026, most associations had set their 2027 trials in that window. A child who misses out at 11 or 12 is a year away from the next chance, not out of the pathway.

Use the year. Keep your child playing domestic, where they get real minutes, and look at the pre-trial programs associations run before trials. Hills runs Prep4Reps in Term 3 for U12 to U16 local players who have not played rep. Norths runs Prep for Rep for U12 and U14 boys and girls. Marrickville Spirit's Rep Prep ran from July before its 2027 trials, and City of Sydney's Junior Rep Development is open to all players. Penrith runs a two-day Prep 4 Rep holiday camp for players aiming at its 2027 program.

Questions parents ask

Can my child still get into a team after missing out?

Sometimes. Hornsby says it may offer selection at any point of the trials process, and Hills' 2024 selection policy says a development player can become a full player if they replace one. Hills also says a mid-season move from its Rookie squad is unlikely.

Will the association tell us why our child was not selected?

It depends on the association. Hills' 2024 selection policy says feedback can be requested. Marrickville Spirit says it cannot give individual feedback because of trial numbers. Ask the rep coordinator by email what to work on next.

What is a development or train-on player?

A player who trains with a rep team but rarely plays. City of Sydney says its development players attend all training but are unlikely to play, and Bulls says its development players may fill in when a rostered player is unavailable.

Should we trial at a different association next year?

Possibly, but read the rules first. You will need an Intent to Trial form, a clearance if selected, and a spot under the team's transfer cap. A player who did not play rep the previous season counts as a free transfer, one per team.

When is the next chance to trial?

Next year's trial window. When we checked on 9 October 2026, most Sydney associations had set their 2027 trials across October and early November 2026, and Norths says its trials run every year from October to November.
