What is rep basketball in Victoria?

Rep basketball in Victoria means the Victorian Junior Basketball League, the VJBL. Your child tries out for their association, and if selected, plays Friday night games against teams from other associations. It runs March to September in age groups from Under 12 to Under 20.

Rep means representing your association

In domestic basketball your child plays against other teams inside their own association. In rep they represent that whole association against other associations across the state.

The competition they play in is the VJBL, run by Basketball Victoria. Basketball Victoria describes it as the highest level of junior competition in the state.

The word rep and the letters VJBL get used to mean the same thing in conversation, and for a parent's purposes they do.

What the commitment actually looks like

This is the part parents underestimate, so it is worth being blunt about it.

  • Games are on Friday nights, home and away against other associations.
  • Training is commonly twice a week on top of that.
  • The season runs March to September, with 18 regular season games.
  • There are no fixtures over Christmas or during school holidays.
  • At some associations your child is also required to keep playing domestic during the rep season, which means a second game most weekends.

Add travel to that. Friday night away games can be an hour each way depending on the draw, and that is a school night.

Age groups

The VJBL runs age groups from Under 12 through to Under 20, for both boys and girls. Below Under 12 there is no rep competition, so domestic is the only option.

When tryouts happen

Tryouts are generally held at the start of Term 4, in October, for the season starting the following March.

That timing catches a lot of families out. If you wait until the season starts to think about rep, you have already missed the tryout by five months. Exact dates are set by each association, so check with yours.

Questions parents ask

Is rep basketball better coaching than domestic?

Not automatically. Rep is a higher standard of competition, which is different. The quality of coaching varies club by club at both levels, so judge the individual coach rather than the label.

Does my child still play domestic if they make rep?

Often yes. Some associations require it, Kingston being one that states it openly. Check with your association before you assume rep replaces domestic, because it frequently does not.

What happens if my child misses tryouts?

You generally wait for the next tryout round the following October, though associations sometimes take players mid season if a team is short. Ring the association and ask rather than assuming the door is shut.

How many games are in a rep season?

The VJBL runs an 18 game regular season between March and September, with no fixtures over Christmas or school holidays. Finals and tournaments sit on top of that.

Getting ready for October tryouts?
