Who the Sydney Comets are

The City of Sydney Basketball Association (CSBA) is a not-for-profit community organisation, and its representative teams are the Sydney Comets. Its home is Comets Stadium in Alexandria, also called Alexandria Stadium, a two-court venue with seating for more than 600 on the main court and a short 8-minute walk from Green Square Station. The association says it was the first stadium built in the area and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018.

Players come from a wide area: the eastern and south-eastern suburbs, the inner city and the inner west. CSBA reports a membership of about 2,500 and more than 4,000 people visiting the stadium each week. Its 2026 handbook said it would field 26 junior representative teams and 5 senior representative teams that year.

Comets trials for 2027

CSBA announced on 8 September 2026 that Sydney Comets junior representative trials for the 2027 season would run across October and November, for Under 12, 14, 16 and 18 boys and girls. The trial page's text does not list the dates, so we have not copied any here. Registration is through the button on the official trials page, which takes you into CSBA's members portal. Check there, or with the Comets office, for the sessions in your child's age group.

If your child played rep for another association in 2026, expect to need an Intent to Trial form. Basketball NSW's rules say a player registered with one association cannot trial with another until that form is completed, and the form is not a clearance.

What a Comets season looks like

The 2026 Comets handbook is the latest one published, and it shows the shape of a year. Official training started on 27 January 2026, and the Summer Slam pre-season tournament followed from 30 January to 1 February. Basketball NSW's pre-season grading began on 15 February and can last up to four weeks, and placed teams in the Junior Premier League (JPL), the highest division and only for Under 14, 16 and 18, or the Metro Junior League (MJL), which took all Under 12 teams and the other Under 14 to 18 teams.

Round 1 was on 15 March, with finals, State Championships and State Cup through July and August.

For 2027, Basketball NSW's Waratah Junior League Rules of Operation list a league called the Waratah State Championships alongside the MJL and do not mention the JPL.

Each team trains twice a week for 90 minutes, on weekday afternoons or evenings at venues in the Comets area. Teams have 10 rostered players. Playing time is not guaranteed, except in Under 12s, where every player must get court time in both halves. All Comets rep players, including development players, must also play CSBA local competition, at least two of the three seasons in their own age group, unless they get an exemption.

The 2026 levies were $901.37 for a rostered player, made up of an $800 levy and a $101.37 compulsory uniform that the player keeps, and $450 for a development player. Basketball NSW registration, local competition fees, the warm-up tee and training singlet, travel and interstate tournaments are extra. The Comets offer scholarships for families in financial hardship, and the handbook encourages any family needing help to contact the Comets office in confidence.

Where the Comets play

For Season 2026-3, CSBA lists five venues for junior games: Comets Stadium, Perry Park Recreation Centre, Matraville Sports High School, Marrickville PCYC and Sydney University. CSBA publishes the Comets Stadium address itself. For the other venues, the addresses below come from the council, PCYC or school that runs them, and we found no published address for the Sydney University venue.

Local competition

CSBA runs competitions for U8s to U18s across three seasons a year, with no games during school or public holidays. Under 16 and Under 18 girls play on Friday nights at Comets Stadium, between 4:20pm and 9:35pm. All other age groups, Under 10 to Under 18 boys and girls, play on Saturdays between 8am and 8:50pm at multiple venues.

Season 2026-3 started on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 September, with grand finals on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 December 2026. Teams nominate through CSBA's LMP online platform. Entries are capped in every age group and division, and a waiting list opens once a division is full. Representative players from any association may only play in Divisions 1 and 2, and not at all in Under 8 or Under 10.

There are two costs. Player registration covers insurance and CSBA membership, and every player needs a current Basketball NSW registration. Game fees are charged per team, per game: from Season 2026-3, $100 per game for Under 10s, $105 for Under 12s and Under 14s, and $110 for Under 16s and Under 18s. If your child has no team, use the Individual Player Board.

Programs for younger kids

The Ford Aussie Hoops Rookie Program is CSBA's non-competitive introduction for children aged 5 to 8. City Ford Learn to Play classes continue the path: a Year 2 to 4 group for ages 7 to 10, a Year 4 to 6 group for ages 9 to 12, and an All Girls program for girls aged 5 to 13.

Term 4 2026 runs for 9 weeks: Mondays from 12 October to 7 December, Wednesdays from 14 October to 9 December, and Saturdays from 17 October to 12 December. Aussie Hoops costs $150 for a returning participant or $205 for a new participant, including the one-off participant pack, and Learn to Play costs $150. Active Kids vouchers are accepted.

If your child misses selection

Comets teams can select development players on top of the 10 rostered players. They are expected at every training session but are unlikely to play in games, and only two may sit on the bench during a game. The handbook is clear that a development spot applies only to the current season and does not guarantee a team the following year.

Below that, CSBA runs development programs year round. The Comets Basketball Academy is an early-morning program for junior players of all abilities, led by Comets rep coaches, and Shooting School is a Term 4 after-school program run by the Comets development manager. Before this year's trials, the Junior Rep Development program ran seven sessions with on-court, strength and conditioning and film work, open to all players.

The Rep Rookies program, for young players looking towards rep in 2027, has run as a weekly one-hour Wednesday session at Comets Stadium for players successful at its trials, at $300 plus a training singlet. Watch the news page for next year's dates.
