Marrickville Spirit Basketball Association describes itself as a basketball organisation in the heart of Marrickville. It runs weekly domestic competitions, a Basketball NSW affiliated representative program in the Waratah League, and learn-to-play and skills sessions. It is community run, under the not-for-profit association, and Basketball NSW lists it as Marrickville Spirit Basketball among its affiliated associations.
Nearly everything happens in one building. Spirit's primary venue is the Marrickville PCYC Sports Centre, and Spirit says its home court is run by Marrickville PCYC. That matters for your budget: Spirit says that to take part in any of its programs at Marrickville PCYC, your child needs a PCYC membership as well as a Basketball NSW membership registered with Spirit.
You will see it called both Spirit Basketball and Marrickville Spirit on its own site. They are the same association.
Spirit has confirmed its trial schedule for 2027 junior rep teams in Under 12, 14, 16 and 18, boys and girls. Trials run from Tuesday 13 October to Thursday 29 October at Marrickville PCYC, except one Under 18 girls session at Sydney Secondary College Leichhardt. Trial 1 in each group is open, and later trials are by invitation only. Under 12 girls have two trials listed, every other group three.
Age groups for 2027: Under 12 is born 2016, 2017 or 2018, Under 14 is born 2014 or 2015, Under 16 is born 2012 or 2013, and Under 18 is born 2010 or 2011. Some boys sessions are split by birth year, so check the exact session for your child.
Registration costs $65 and is non-refundable, and registrations close when the groups are full. Triallists must register in advance, arrive at least 30 minutes early and be available for every session, and any exemption request must be made in writing. No alternate trial dates are offered.
These are closed trials, so parents cannot watch. Your child needs a reversible singlet, a ball and a water bottle, and Spirit asks that nothing is worn under the singlet because trial numbers are noted on the shoulders. Spirit also says that, because of the number of triallists, it cannot give individual feedback on performance or selection.
If your child has previously played with another association, Spirit requires them to complete Basketball NSW's Intent to Trial form. Note that the rep tile on Spirit's home page still mentions the 2026 season; the 2027 Junior Rep Trials page is the current one.
Spirit has junior and senior rep teams at Under 12, 14, 16 and 18 and in Youth League, and they all compete in Basketball NSW's Waratah Metro League. For its junior teams Spirit calls it the Waratah Junior Metro League.
Its rep commitment page lays out the year. Each team trains at least two nights a week, subject to court availability. Pre-season training typically starts in early February, and the league's pre-season also takes place in February. The season usually runs 10 to 15 rounds between March and July, with a finals series one to two weeks after the last round. Teams may also be eligible for tournaments.
Every Spirit rep player must also play in a Marrickville Spirit junior local competition, which runs during school terms through the year.
Spirit does not publish a rep season fee on its website; we checked its rep pages and found none. Ask for the full season cost, including uniform, before you accept a place.

Spirit runs junior local competitions on three days, all at Marrickville PCYC during school terms. Each runs by term, and the Term 4 2026 details below are as published when we checked on 9 October 2026.
Monday nights are an all-girls competition between 4:15pm and 8:45pm. The age groups are Under 12 (born 2015 to 2018) and Under 14, 16 and 18 (born 2009 to 2014). Term 4 runs from 19 October to 14 December 2026, including nine weeks of games, semis and finals.
Friday nights are the boys competition, between 4:20pm and 10:30pm, for Under 14 (divisions 1 and 2, born 2013 and 2014), Under 16 (divisions 1 to 3, born 2011 and 2012) and Under 18 (divisions 1 to 3, born 2009 and 2010). Term 4 runs from 16 October to 11 December 2026, ten weeks including semis and finals.
Saturdays are a mixed competition between 11:40am and 2:45pm for Under 10 (born 2017 to 2019) and Under 12 (born 2015 and 2016). Term 4 runs from 17 October to 12 December 2026.
Fees are the same across all three: $1,340 per team, or $200 per player if you enter as an individual and Spirit places your child in a team, space permitting. The Saturday page offers a 50 percent discount for eligible new registrations; email Spirit to apply. Teams need 7 to 10 players, matching numbered uniforms and a coach with a Working With Children Check, and are generally limited to three rep players. Individuals buy a local comp singlet. Every player also needs Basketball NSW and PCYC junior memberships, and refunds are only given if Spirit cannot place you.
Aussie Hoops at Marrickville PCYC is run by Spirit's coaches and, on Spirit's Aussie Hoops page, is for 5 to 12 year olds. In Term 4 2026 there are Monday sessions from 19 October to 14 December (ages 5 to 8 at 4pm, a girls-only group for ages 5 to 12 at 4:40pm, and ages 9 to 12 at 5:20pm) and Wednesday sessions from 14 October to 16 December (ages 5 to 8 at 5pm and ages 9 to 12 at 5:40pm).
It costs $136 for new participants and $121 for returning participants for Term 4 2026. Spirit describes Aussie Hoops as a pathway into its local competitions and rep teams, and its Saturday competition starts at Under 10.
Player Development runs on Wednesdays at Fort Street High School from 14 October to 16 December 2026, at $180 for ten weeks. Sessions are split into beginner (recommended ages 10 to 12, 5pm), intermediate (13 to 14, 6pm) and advanced (15 to 17, 7pm). Spirit says it is run by qualified representative-level coaches for players of all abilities. As with every Spirit program, players need a Basketball NSW membership registered with Spirit.
Rep Prep is Spirit's lead-in program for trials, led by its rep coaches and overseen by the Head of Coaching, to prepare players for trials. In 2026 it ran from late July to late September; the Under 12 shooting, finishing and scrimmage program, for example, was $252 for nine weeks.
Spirit Rookies is an invitation-only training squad for Under 10 boys and girls born in 2018 and 2019, which Spirit calls a pathway to its rep teams. In Term 4 2026 it runs on Wednesdays from 6:20pm to 7pm at Marrickville PCYC, and Spirit invites families to email about it.
And the local competitions run every school term, so a child who misses a rep team can keep playing every week.
First, register your child as a Basketball NSW member with Spirit, then take out a PCYC junior membership. Then register through the competition page for your child's day, as a team or an individual, and pay through Basketball Connect by Australian credit card or direct debit.
