Inner West Bulls Basketball: a parent's guide

Bulls Basketball, also known as the Inner West Bulls and originally as Ryde Bulls, is based at RydeX on Eagle Street, Ryde, where it runs its local competitions. Its junior rep program plays in the Metro Junior League. Trials for 2027 junior rep teams began on Saturday 26 September and run to Saturday 31 October, mostly at Galuwa Recreation Centre in Lane Cove.

Who the Bulls are

Bulls Basketball goes by more than one name. The club's rep guide says it was originally known as Ryde Bulls and is now known as Bulls Basketball or the Inner West Bulls. Basketball NSW lists it as Bulls Basketball among its affiliated associations, and its website is innerwestbulls.com.

Despite the Inner West name, the club's address is 28 Eagle Street, Ryde NSW 2112. That is the RydeX 'Bull Pen', which the club calls the spiritual home of the Bulls and where all of its local competitions are played. Its venue list stretches from Ryde and North Ryde to Lane Cove, Concord, Five Dock, Ashfield, Ashbury, Leichhardt and Darlington, so where your child plays or trains depends on the program.

The Bulls describe themselves as a community committed to developing young athletes on and off the court. The club's website also covers a senior rep program and NBL1 basketball, but this page sticks to what a junior family needs to know.

Bulls trials for 2027

The club's 2027 trial page lists junior sessions from Saturday 26 September to Saturday 31 October, and its Intent to Trial page calls them the October trials. Most are at Galuwa Recreation Centre in Lane Cove, some are at Concord Oval Recreation Centre, and two invite-only boys sessions are at Sydney Uni. Every session time is on that page, by age group, so check your child's group there.

The 2027 age groups are Under 12 (born 2016, 2017 or 2018), Under 14 (born 2014 or 2015), Under 16 (born 2012 or 2013) and Under 18 (born 2010 or 2011), for boys and girls.

Girls and boys trial differently. Junior girls attend all three of their sessions. Junior boys who are transfers, development players or not currently in a rep team attend sessions 1 and 2, and sessions 3 and 4 are by invitation only, together with returning squad members. The club says the trials are run by guest coaches, with its rep coaches watching.

Registrations close 48 hours before each trial starts. The club says registration and payment details vary between age groups, and it does not print a trial fee in the page text, so read your child's group carefully before you pay. If your child cannot attend their allocated session, the club says selection cannot be guaranteed. Bring a reversible singlet, a towel, a water bottle and a ball.

If your child played rep basketball in the Waratah Junior League for another association, they must complete the Basketball NSW Intent to Trial form before attending. Once it goes in, your old association and the Bulls are both sent an automatic email with your child's details. The Bulls also say there are limits to how many transfer players they can take each year.

Before trials the club runs Prep for Reps, a lead-in program for players hoping to make a 2027 junior rep team or simply wanting to lift their game. Head of Coaching and Player Development Terry (TJ) Johnson leads it with Bulls rep coaches, using small-sided games to work on fundamentals. It costs $35 for a single session or $120 for all four, and the page does not list session dates.

What rep costs and involves

The latest rep fees the Bulls publish are for the 2026 season, as published when we checked on 9 October 2026. Full players paid $1,990 in three instalments: $664 on acceptance, $663 at the end of January and $663 at the end of February. Development players paid $1,150 in two instalments: $664 on acceptance and $486 at the end of January. We could not find 2027 rep fees on the site.

The club's cost estimate per player lists Metro Junior League entry ($330), Central Coast Classic entry ($70), Nunawading entry ($60), game day admin such as referees and supervisors ($200), coach travel ($107), training court hire ($1,070) and an admin fee ($72), with five of those items marked as squad only. Uniforms, merchandise, and travel and accommodation for tournaments are extra. The 2026 guide says payment plans and Active Kids vouchers were accepted.

The commitment is a full season. Training starts in January with two 1.5 hour sessions a week. Players must attend every training and game, and the club asks families not to accept a spot if they plan to attend tournaments or tours during the rep season. Every rep player must also play in the Bulls local competition and must list the Bulls as their primary Basketball NSW registration.

In 2026 the Metro Junior League ran from pre-season in February to grand finals in late July, with State Cup in August, and the club says it is crucial that players are available on all of those dates.

Where the Bulls play

RydeX 'Bull Pen', 28 Eagle Street, Ryde NSW 2112. Use the stairs off Eagle Street to get in. The club calls it the spiritual home of the Bulls. All Spring 2026 local competitions are played here, as are the Saturday Aussie Hoops sessions.

Galuwa Recreation Centre, 180 River Road, Lane Cove 2066. The main venue for the 2027 junior rep trials.

Concord Oval Recreation Centre, 8 Gipps Street, Concord NSW 2137. Some trial sessions, plus the Monday afternoon Aussie Hoops group.

Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre, corner of Codrington St and Darlington Lane, Darlington 2008. Used for two invite-only junior boys trial sessions.

Five Dock Leisure Centre, corner of Queens Road and William Street, Five Dock 2046, and Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre, 504 Victoria Road, Ryde 2112, hosted the club's October 2026 school holiday camps.

Local competition

The Bulls run local competition by season rather than by school term. The Spring 2026 season started on 20 July and runs to 13 December 2026, with games on every day of the week depending on the competition. Saturday games, for example, run from 25 July to 12 December. There are unisex, boys and girls competitions, and all of them are played at RydeX.

Game fees for Spring 2026 are $325 per player, as published when we checked on 9 October 2026. You can set up a team through the club's link or pay individually. The nights and times for each competition are in the date and time tables linked from the Play at Bulls page, so check there for your child's group.

Every player also needs a Basketball NSW registration, which the club notes is required for competitions throughout NSW. For local competition questions the club's email is basketball@bullsbasketball.au.

Programs for younger children

The Bulls run Ford Aussie Hoops, Basketball Australia's official introductory program, which the club describes as being for 5 to 10 year olds. In Term 4 2026 there are two options. Saturday mornings at RydeX run from 17 October to 12 December, with boys from 9am to 10am and girls from 10am to 11am. Monday afternoons at Concord Oval Recreation Centre run from 12 October to 7 December, for girls and boys from 5pm to 6pm. Both list ages 5 to 11.

Term 4 2026 costs, as published when we checked on 9 October 2026: a new Aussie Hooper pays $242, which is $192 plus a $50 pack, with a choice of three packs. A returning Aussie Hooper pays $172, and the pack is optional.

For slightly older children, the club runs school holiday camps for boys and girls aged 7 to 16 of all skill levels, from beginners to rep players. The October 2026 camps were $75 per participant.

If your child misses selection

Missing a Bulls team does not have to mean missing the year. The club carries development players, who are invited to train with the rep teams. They are not guaranteed playing time, but they can be called on to fill in when a rostered player is injured or unavailable, and the club describes the role as a pathway into full representative positions. In 2026 a development spot cost $1,150.

And the Spring local competition at RydeX is open to everyone, so a child who misses out can keep playing every week at the club's home stadium.

How to join

For a first season, start with the Play at Bulls page: set up a team, or pay individually. Your child will also need a Basketball NSW registration. For Aussie Hoops, register through the club's Beginner Skills page.

For rep, register through the 2027 trial page before the 48 hour cut-off for your child's session, and complete the Intent to Trial form first if they have played rep elsewhere. Questions about trials go to admin@bullsbasketball.au.
