St George Saints Basketball: a parent's guide

St George Basketball Association, whose rep teams play as the St George Saints, serves the St George area, which it says covers the Georges River and Bayside council areas. Its junior local competitions run on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights at Hurstville Aquatic Leisure Centre and Morris Iemma Indoor Sports Centre. Registration for 2027 Saints rep trials is open, but the website does not print the trial dates.

Who the Saints are

St George Basketball Association Incorporated (SGBA) runs local and representative basketball for the St George area, which it says covers two council areas, Georges River Council and Bayside Council. Its rep teams play as the Saints, and its motto is Honour, Integrity, Respect. Basketball NSW lists it as St George Basketball among its affiliated associations.

The association is run entirely by volunteers and is open about one thing: it does not have its own facility, something it says it has been chasing for over 20 years. Its 2025 rep handbook says it leases the Hurstville Aquatic Leisure Centre, known as HALC and also as Johnny Warren Stadium, and HALC is where most of its local competition is played.

It describes itself as a small association with big hearts, and says it aims to develop players from Learn to Play classes through to senior representative level.

Saints trials for 2027

The Saints Representative page says nominations for 2027 Saints representative teams are open, with a link to register, and the association's Linktree lists '2027 Saints Representative Trials' alongside a link to Basketball NSW's Junior Player Intent to Trial Form. The website does not print 2027 trial dates, venues or a trial fee.

The most recent junior handbook linked from the site is the 2025 edition. It set out the process then: register online, attend all selection trial dates advertised on social media, and watch for squads announced under the Saints tab of the website. We could not find 2027 dates on the website, so the association's social media is the place to look.

In 2025 every child was watched throughout trials by a selection panel: the head coach, the team coaches, SGBA development officers and independent coaches appointed by the association. They noted individual skills, team skills, speed, size, height, athleticism, defence, position and the mix of bottom-age and top-age players. Team coaches then picked squads, usually at least 10 per team, and the second team in each age group, the white team, could carry up to three extra development players who train with the team.

Treat those as last season's rules until a 2027 junior handbook appears on the Saints page.

What Saints rep costs and involves

The most recent junior rep fee SGBA publishes is for the 2025 season, as published when we checked on 9 October 2026: $990 for a junior representative player. That covered pre-season and weekly game fees and finals, training and court hire, referee payments and supervisors, uniforms (shorts, home and away singlets and a warm-up shirt), team nomination, State Cup entry if applicable, and home game entry for two adults. A reversible training top was an extra $45, and development or reserve players paid a $575 levy. No 2026 or 2027 junior figure is on the website.

The association says genuine cases of hardship will be considered, and families can apply in confidence to the Representative Manager.

In 2025 junior rep teams played the Waratah Metro League on Sundays, with games tipping off between 8:30am and 4pm at venues across greater Sydney, and trained twice a week where possible. Opponents named in the 2025 handbook were Bankstown, Blue Mountains, Glebe, Hawkesbury, Hills, Hornsby, Liverpool, Macarthur, Manly, North Sydney, Penrith, Ryde, Springwood, Sutherland and Sydney City. Every junior rep player had to play in an SGBA domestic competition, or pay a $200 penalty levy.

The 2025 handbook also says teams that qualify can nominate for the NSW State Championships and NSW State Cup, and that entry is not compulsory.

Where the Saints play

Hurstville Aquatic Leisure Centre (HALC), corner of King Georges Road and Forest Road, Hurstville NSW 2220, as the centre's own website gives it. There is no street number. All three weeknight competitions use it, and the Mini Dragons Academy runs here.

Morris Iemma Indoor Sports Centre (MIISC), 150 Belmore Rd North, Riverwood 2210, as Canterbury-Bankstown Council publishes it. SGBA's own page writes it as 150 North Belmore Road, Riverwood. Part of the Tuesday competition is played here.

Blakehurst High School, 270A Woniora Road, Blakehurst NSW 2221, with entry via Forster Street according to SGBA. The development programs run here, and the 2025 handbook put pre-Christmas rep squad training at the school's stadium.

Local competition

SGBA runs local competitions all year round for ages from Under 10 to seniors, and they run on weeknights; we found no weekend junior competition. The 2026 to 2027 competition started in late August 2026.

Tuesday nights, from 25 August, at HALC and MIISC: Under 12 Girls, Under 14 Girls, Under 16/18 Girls and Under 18 Boys. Wednesday nights, from 26 August, at HALC: Under 14 Boys. Thursday nights, from 27 August, at HALC: Under 10 Mixed, Under 12 Mixed and Under 16 Boys.

Fees as of August 2026: player registration is $150.50 including the Basketball NSW levy, or an $80 affiliation fee if your child already holds a valid annual registration with another Basketball NSW association. The 2026 season game fees are $221 plus GST per player for Under 12 to Under 18, covering 17 rounds and 2 rounds of finals, and $228 plus GST per player for Under 10, covering 19 rounds.

No team? Use the 'I'm looking for a team' form on the competition page, or email office@sgba.com.au, and the association says it will help you find one.

Programs for younger children

SGBA's development programs run by term at Blakehurst High School. The Term 3 timetable (20 July to 26 September) still on its website shows Aussie Hoops Rookie on Mondays from 4pm to 5pm ($140 for new players and $150 for returning players, 10 weeks), Girls Got Game on Fridays from 4:30pm, Learn to Play on Saturdays from 9am to 10am ($150 for 10 weeks) and Saints Squad on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm ($250 for 10 weeks). Its Linktree lists all four again for Term 4.

The Mini Dragons Academy is for young players with some experience who are ready to move into competitive basketball. Its 2026 run was 15 weeks on Thursdays from 4:45pm at Hurstville Aquatic Centre, from 23 April to 13 August, for $225, with 45 minutes of skills training and a game each session.

For girls, Her Place in Basketball, Beyond the Court, is a five-week program run in collaboration with Basketball NSW that helps young female players see where the game can take them, including coaching, refereeing and leadership. The Linktree lists it for October to November.

If your child misses selection

The 2025 handbook spells this out. From each training squad a team of 10 was picked, and squad players who missed out could be selected as development players or as a development team, which was entered in the Barrengarry tournament, played over three weekends at locations in southern NSW. All squad players were encouraged to keep training with the team through the season.

Its advice to players who are not selected is not to despair, and to use the association's development programs, which it says many of its rep players came through. Saints Squad on Saturday mornings was the longest session on the Term 3 timetable at three hours, and the weeknight local competition keeps your child playing every week.

How to join

Register a player only once your child is placed in a team or about to start; SGBA asks families not to renew or take out a second registration if they already hold a current one with the Saints. If your child is registered with another Basketball NSW association, you only pay the affiliation fee. The association's contact number is 0498 021 127, Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm.
