Bankstown Bruins Basketball: a parent's guide

Bankstown Basketball Association runs the Bankstown Bruins from Bankstown Basketball Stadium, a seven-court venue at 1 Third Avenue, Condell Park. Juniors play local competition on Monday afternoons, Friday nights and Saturdays, and junior trials for 2027 Bruins rep teams start on Tuesday 13 October and Thursday 15 October 2026.

Who the Bruins are

Bankstown Basketball Association runs junior and senior basketball under the Bankstown Bruins name, and Basketball NSW lists it as Bankstown Basketball among its affiliated associations. Its rep page says that over the Bruins' 50 plus years the association has developed players, coaches, referees and officials who went on to make NSW, NBL, WNBL and Australian teams.

Its base is Bankstown Basketball Stadium, which the association describes as having 7 basketball courts and an average of 5,000 visitors a week, and as home to the Bruins representative teams. It also runs a large referee program, which it says has over 190 officials and services over 150 junior and senior domestic games a week.

Bruins trials for 2027

Junior trials for 2027 Bruins teams are listed on the association's Representative page, and its holiday camps page places the rep trials in October 2026. Boys have four trial weeks and girls three. Under 12 and Under 16 groups trial on Tuesdays (13, 20 and 27 October, and 3 November for boys), and Under 14 and Under 18 groups on Thursdays (15, 22 and 29 October, and 5 November for boys). Under 12 and Under 14 sessions run from 4:30pm to 6pm, and Under 16 and Under 18 from 6pm to 7:30pm. The trial list does not name a venue.

Boys who are not current rep players, or are new to the Bruins, trial from week 1 (13 or 15 October). Boys who played for the Bruins in 2026 start in week 3 (27 or 29 October). Girls trial in weeks 1, 2 and 3 only.

Age groups: Under 12 is born 2016, 2017 or 2018, Under 14 is born 2014 or 2015, Under 16 is born 2012 or 2013, and Under 18 is born 2010 or 2011.

Trials are open to all community members. There is a one-off trial fee paid on registration, but the amount is not shown on the website; registration is a GameDay form titled for the 2027 junior program, which takes payment online. There is also a trial exemption form.

If your child has recently represented another association in Basketball NSW's Junior Waratah Leagues, Bankstown requires a permission to trial form, listed on its site as the Intent to Trial form, and a transfer form if your child is selected.

What Bruins rep involves

Junior rep teams train on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Bankstown Basketball Stadium: Under 12s and 14s from 4:30pm to 6pm, and Under 16s and 18s from 6pm to 7:30pm.

The 2027 junior rep coaches are already named on the Representative page, at least two for each age group, though the association says that may change depending on team numbers. For 2026 the association announced a Blue and a White team in every junior age group for boys and girls, plus a third Under 16 girls team, Sky.

Fees for 2027 are not published. The association says an invoice is sent on selection and a deposit is required when you accept a team position, and that 2027 season dates will be released shortly. The only rep fee schedule on the website is for the 2022 season, so do not budget from it; ask for the 2027 figure before you accept.

Where the Bruins play

Bankstown Basketball Stadium, 1 Third Avenue, Condell Park 2200. That address comes from Canterbury-Bankstown Council's venue page; we could not find a street address printed on the association's own pages. The council lists seven basketball courts, a canteen, and amenities and change rooms, and says the stadium offers sports competitions and holiday training programs. Bruins rep training and the Bankstown skills classes run here.

Whitlam Leisure Centre, 90A Memorial Avenue, Liverpool. The association runs Wednesday skills classes and holiday camps here; its site does not mention a junior competition at this venue.

Birrong Boys High School Sports Hall hosts Monday skills classes from 5pm to 6pm. The site gives no street address for it.

Local competitions

Bankstown runs three separate junior competitions, and a player can play in more than one of them.

The Monday Primary School Competition is on Monday afternoons in school term for Years 2 to 6, with games at 4pm, 4:50pm and 5:40pm. Teams are formed through local primary schools, currently Picnic Point, Padstow Heights PS and Milperra PS, and children from other schools can be added to a mixed school team. It has a summer season in Terms 1 and 2 and a winter season in Terms 3 and 4.

Friday nights cater for boys Under 12 to Under 18 and girls Under 14 to Under 18. Saturdays cater for boys Under 11 to Under 19 and girls Under 11 to Under 17. Both run a summer season across Terms 4 and 1 and a winter season across Terms 2 and 3, with breaks in school holidays. Players must be under the age of their age group in the year the competition begins, and must play at least 50 percent of the team's games to be eligible for finals.

Costs come in two parts: a Basketball NSW/Bankstown Basketball annual registration, plus a fee to your child's club or team for weekly court fees and uniform. The association does not publish those club or team fees. Not every club or team trains between games; that is the club's decision, and the association offers discounted training through its Skills and Development program. The junior competition page still shows a Winter 2025 start date, so confirm the current season's start with the association.

Programs for younger children

Mini Bruins is for 3 and 4 year olds, on Saturdays from 9am to 10am, with lowered hoops and smaller balls. Aussie Hoops, run with Basketball Australia, is for ages 5 and 6, also on Saturdays from 9am to 10am.

Skills and Development classes are one hour for ages 5 to 17, on Wednesdays at 4:30pm or 5:30pm, Fridays at 4:15pm and Saturdays at 9am or 10am, for about 10 weeks per school term. Term 4 2026 starts on Wednesday 14 October 2026. The Liverpool class page lists the Term 4 2026 cost as $160 for new members and $125 for returning members, and the Bankstown class page shows the same two figures. Children under 14 need one parent supervising during the session.

The Under 10's Development League is for 7 to 10 year olds with some basketball experience who are too young for the junior domestic competition. Each 90-minute session is 45 minutes of training and 45 minutes of mini games.

If your child misses selection

The Bruins Development Squad is a one-hour weekly session on Wednesdays from 5:30pm to 6:30pm, run the way a Bruins rep training runs. It is for players who have trialled for a Bruins rep team before, or plan to. Squad trials are held at the start of the year, after rep teams are announced in Term 4, and further trials may be held at the start of each term.

The Girls Development Program is for girls aged 8 to 17: a weekly hour on Friday afternoons at 4:15pm, half training and half game. A senior girls program for ages 12 to 17 runs on Wednesdays from 5:30pm.

And because the Friday and Saturday competitions are separate, a child who misses a rep team can play in both.

How to join

If your child does not have a team, complete the Junior Want to Play form. No payment is needed until your child is placed, placement is not guaranteed, and your details are passed to clubs or teams looking for players in that age group. To enter a whole team, email the Junior Competitions Manager, or call the stadium on 9707 1866. The association accepts the Active Kids voucher for the online annual registration.
