What junior basketball really costs in NSW

Junior basketball in NSW is several layers, not one fee. Every player pays a Basketball NSW participant membership, usually collected by the association with its own charge added. Domestic adds team or game fees. Rep adds a trial fee, a season fee that Sydney associations published at $850 to $1,990 for full players in 2026 or 2027, and uniforms, tournaments and travel.

Nobody sends you one bill

Basketball is not sold as a single price. It arrives in layers: a state membership set by Basketball NSW, a registration or affiliation charge set by your association, competition fees, and, for rep players, a separate season fee plus uniforms, tournaments and travel.

Basketball NSW says the fee depends on the participant's age, that it includes the State fee, and that the association will advise you of the fees to pay. It also says that without the State fee a child cannot play at any of its affiliated associations. So the registration figure on an association's website is usually a combined amount, which is why it can differ from Basketball NSW's own table.

Layer one: the Basketball NSW participant membership

Basketball NSW publishes its 2026 state participant fees in two tables, 6 months and 12 months, shown below with GST. The junior 8 to 11 category is for players who have reached, or will reach, that age by 31 December in that year. Aussie Hoops, Basketball Australia's learn to play program for children aged 5 to 10, carries a separate small fee.

The 6-month option became available to new participants from 1 January 2026, and Basketball NSW says participants whose renewal falls in December can choose either option. If your child plays year round, Basketball NSW recommends the 12-month membership upfront, because there is no refund or price adjustment for buying two 6-month memberships back to back.

Two smaller items can appear at checkout. Basketball NSW marks its 8 to 11 and 12 and above categories with a note about Basketball Australia's Game Development Levy, $5 plus GST, which it says is passed on to each player registration from 2025. It also describes a technology fee surcharge, which it says covers payment provider and bank merchant fees and the cost of running the platform.

Ages 12 and above$50.00 + $5.00 GST = $55.00$65.00 + $6.50 GST = $71.50

The $55 trap, and why your association charges more

In the 2026 tables, $55 appears twice. It is the 12-month fee for juniors aged 8 to 11, and it is also the 6-month fee for players aged 12 and above. A parent who reads $55 without the age and the term attached can easily buy the wrong membership, or assume a full year is covered when it is not. Always read $55 together with your child's age and the length of the membership.

What you actually pay your association is higher, because it adds its own part. Penrith says its registration includes individual player injury insurance and affiliation to Basketball NSW, and Hornsby shows its 2026 figures including GST and a 3 per cent transaction fee. The table below shows what several Sydney associations published.

A child who also plays at a second association pays an affiliation fee there; Hornsby says members of other associations are only required to pay an affiliation fee. Basketball NSW calls this secondary registration and says it lapses when the primary one does. Hornsby's 2026 affiliation fee was $77.25 for 12 months, St George lists an $80 affiliation fee for juniors, and Penrith lists secondary fees of $110 for 12 and over and $77 for 11 and under.

Layer two: domestic fees

Domestic fees follow two models. Some associations charge each team, per game or per competition, like Hills, City of Sydney and Manly, and Manly says its team fee is divided by the number of players. Others charge each player, like Blacktown, Bulls, St George and Camden Valley. Compare like with like before deciding one association is cheaper.

Read what sits on top. Blacktown adds a $90 nomination fee per team, plus its membership. Marrickville Spirit requires Basketball NSW and PCYC memberships, and individual players buy a local competition singlet; its Saturday competition offers a 50 per cent discount for eligible new individual registrations. Norths charges a non-refundable $150 team entry fee plus a deposit of three rounds of game fees, with the balance paid later.

Layer three: rep

Rep starts with a trial fee. For the 2027 trials, published amounts ranged from $25 per stage at Parramatta Cumberland to $70 at Norths, with Sutherland at $30, Blacktown at $45, Camden Valley at $50, Manly at $60 and Marrickville Spirit at $65. Hornsby charges $33 for boys Round 1 and $60 for Rounds 2 to 4.

Then the season fee, which is where the money is. The table below shows every Sydney rep fee for the 2026 or 2027 season that we found published when we checked on 9 October 2026. We found no published 2026 or 2027 season amount for several associations: Bankstown says an invoice is sent on selection with a deposit to accept, Wollondilly's handbook says payment plans are available through Basketball Connect, Hornsby's rep page shows its 2026 levy as TBC, St George's rep page links only its 2025 junior handbook, and we found no season amount in the page text for Blacktown, Penrith, Marrickville Spirit or Sutherland.

Check what the fee covers. Norths' 2027 fee covers team registration and game fees, entry to the State Championships and State Cup, court hire for midweek training, a coach honorarium, and referee and supervisor payments, but not membership, uniforms, extra training, tournaments or travel. Bulls broke its 2026 fee into estimated parts per player, including $330 for Metro Junior League entry and $1,070 for training court hire.

Uniforms, tournaments and travel

Uniforms are usually extra. Sutherland requires every rep player to buy Sharks playing shorts at $40 and a training singlet at $50. Camden Valley's 2027 prices for new rep players are $60 for a personalised reversible jersey, $40 for shorts and $40 for a warm-up top. Manly's 2026 information says the association provides the numbered playing singlet and everything else is bought online, and Hills provides the playing top but says its rep fees cover no other uniform item.

Tournaments and travel add up quietly. Bulls' 2026 fee included squad entries to the Central Coast Classic and Nunawading tournaments, but listed travel and accommodation for tournaments as extra. City of Sydney says most Comets teams go to the Nunawading Spectres Tournament in Melbourne over the June long weekend if they are not invited to the National Junior Classic. Wollondilly's representative handbook, which lists sponsors current as of 1 November 2025, tells families to book accommodation early for its Southern Junior League rounds.

Ways to bring the total down

Ask about sibling discounts. Norths' 2027 handbook mentions a sibling discount of 10 per cent off the first child's fees, and Hills takes $50 off for each second or later sibling in its rep program. Ask about hardship too: Hills and Norths both say they consider fee relief for genuine financial hardship case by case and in confidence, and City of Sydney offers scholarships.

If you receive Family Tax Benefit, the NSW Active and Creative Kids voucher can take up to $100 per child per calendar year off eligible fees with a registered provider, though not off uniforms. And know the refund rule before you pay: Basketball NSW says that once a participant has played or trained, the chance to request a membership refund has passed.

Questions parents ask

How much is the Basketball NSW membership fee?

In Basketball NSW's 2026 tables, 12 months costs $71.50 for ages 12 and above, $55.00 for ages 8 to 11 and $27.50 for under 8s. Six months costs $55.00, $38.50 and $16.50. All include GST.

Why does my association charge more than Basketball NSW's table?

Because the association adds its own part to the State fee. Penrith says its registration includes injury insurance and affiliation to Basketball NSW, and Hornsby's 2026 figures include GST and a 3 per cent transaction fee.

How much does rep basketball cost in Sydney?

Published full-player season fees for 2026 or 2027 ranged from $850 at Manly to $1,990 at Bulls, before trial fees, uniforms, tournaments and travel. When we checked on 9 October 2026, we found no published amount for some associations, including Bankstown and Blacktown.

Can I get a refund on the membership fee?

Usually not. Basketball NSW says that once a participant has played or trained, no matter how briefly, the opportunity to request a refund has passed.

Does the Active and Creative Kids voucher cover uniforms?

No. The Service NSW guidelines list jerseys, socks, clothing and uniforms as ineligible items. The voucher can go towards fees for an eligible activity with a registered provider.
