Wyndham Basketball Association is based at Eagle Stadium in Werribee, a twelve court venue that hosts both its domestic competition and its VJBL home games. Wyndham Basketball Association was formed in 1972 as the Werribee Basketball Association, set up by volunteers to get basketball going in what was then the City of Werribee. The membership voted to change the name to Wyndham Basketball Association in 2019 as the area grew.
The representative teams have long been known as the Devils, a name that goes back to the Werribee era and still follows the association around in results listings and record books.
The association reports around 5,500 junior and senior participants across more than 680 teams. In practice that means a very large domestic competition sitting under a rep program of comparable size.
Everything runs out of Eagle Stadium at 35 Ballan Road, Werribee, about 30 minutes west of the Melbourne CBD. It is a twelve court multi purpose facility.
The stadium seats more than 1,500 spectators and has on site parking for more than 600 cars, changerooms, a canteen, a first aid room, a meeting room, and gym and creche facilities in the same building.
Twelve courts under one roof changes your Saturday. Most associations spread junior fixtures across school gyms, so families chase venues week to week. At Wyndham the domestic competition and the VJBL home games are largely in the one building, which is one of the genuine practical advantages of playing here.
The junior domestic competition is managed by the association itself and played at Eagle Stadium. Each age group is split into several divisions.
Under 8 boys, girls and mixed play on Friday. Under 10, Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 boys and girls play the Saturday competition. That covers most primary and early secondary school families.
The older grades move to weeknights. Under 18 girls, Under 20 women, Under 23 women, Under 18 boys and Under 20 men play Tuesday nights, and Under 23 men play Thursday. It is worth knowing that before your child ages out of Saturday and the fixture suddenly lands midweek.
You join through one of the association's 15 junior domestic clubs, which run their own teams and training. Some are aligned with schools and some are geographic. The association has a form on its site that will point you to the clubs near you if you have no idea where to start.
Wyndham's junior representative program is described by the association as its Junior Championship Program, with more than 40 male and female teams covering roughly ages 10 to 19. Teams play in the VJBL on Friday nights, with the Under 20s scheduled Sunday afternoons.
Rep at Wyndham means two training sessions a week plus the game, with coaches working under a Director of Coaching. That is the standard VJBL load and it is the honest number to plan your week around.
There is a bridging program in between. The Wyndham Rising Stars Academy runs from November through to August and is aimed at Under 10 players already playing domestic who want to step up to Under 12 VJBL. The association is blunt that it is not a beginner program and that athletes need to already be playing domestic at a suitable level.
Rising Stars tryouts sit in the September and October window, the same time as the main VJBL tryouts. Athletes in the academy play two club tournaments a year at external venues rather than a full weekly fixture.
Never played: Aussie Hoops is the association's entry program for young beginners, and there are holiday programs through the year.
Ready for a team: contact one of the 15 junior domestic clubs, or use the association's club finder form and let them point you at the right ones for your suburb and your child's level.
Ready for rep: register for VJBL tryouts through the association ahead of October. If your child is Under 10 and clearly keen, ask about Rising Stars instead of pushing straight into Under 12 trials.
Fees are set per program and change each season, and the rep fee structure is published separately from domestic. Get both from the association rather than assuming one covers the other.
