Kilsyth Basketball: a parent's guide

Kilsyth Basketball runs junior and senior domestic competitions out of Kilsyth Sports Centre in Melbourne's outer east, alongside the Cobras representative program. It's one of the larger associations in Victoria, with fourteen junior domestic clubs and programs starting from age three.

Who Kilsyth Basketball are

Kilsyth Basketball sits in Melbourne's outer east and is one of the bigger associations in the state. It runs the full ladder, from three year olds rolling a ball around through to a senior team in NBL1.

The representative side is called the Cobras, a name you'll hear constantly around the eastern suburbs.

What they run

  • Junior domestic competition across fourteen clubs
  • Senior domestic competition for ages 14 and up
  • An after school competition
  • Wheelchair basketball
  • Junior Cobras in the VJBL, and senior Cobras in NBL1 and the VYC

The junior domestic clubs

Unlike some associations where you simply join the association, at Kilsyth your child plays for one of fourteen clubs inside the junior domestic competition. Which club you join affects your training night, your coach and your uniform, so it's worth asking around before you pick.

Which club will my child play for?

You don't pick from a menu. In practice you join whichever club has a spot in your child's age group, and the association will tell you which ones do.

The fourteen clubs

Crossover, Eagles, Fosters, Flashes, iRespect, Heat, Meteors, Magic, Lakers, Vikings, Saints, Scorpions, Wandin and Venom.

Programs for younger kids

Kilsyth starts earlier than most associations, which matters if you have a five year old and everywhere else has told you to come back in two years.

Where they play

Kilsyth Sports Centre

115 Liverpool Road, Kilsyth VIC 3137. This is the main venue, and the association uses four further venues on top of it, so check your fixture rather than assuming every game is at Liverpool Road.

When the seasons run

Kilsyth runs its domestic seasons around the school terms. Winter runs across Terms 2 and 3. Summer runs from Term 4 into Term 1, skipping Christmas and New Year.

The Cobras VJBL season follows the state calendar, March through to September.

How to join

Contact the association at admin@kilsythbasketball.com.au and tell them your child's age and which side of the association you're closest to. They will point you at clubs with room in that age group.

For the Cobras, you need to go through tryouts, which are generally held in October for the following season.
