Dandenong Basketball Association runs basketball in Melbourne's south east out of Dandenong Stadium. The scale is the thing that sets it apart. The association fields roughly 800 domestic teams every week, across age groups from Under 9 up to open age.
The representative program is the Rangers.
270 Stud Road, Dandenong North VIC 3175. It's a fifteen court facility, which is why the association can run the volume of games it does.
For a parent, fifteen courts means two practical things. You'll usually find a park, and you'll occasionally spend ten minutes working out which court your child is on. Check the fixture before you leave home.
Junior domestic runs in odd numbered age groups rather than the Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 pattern used in some other competitions.
| Age groups | Grades |
|---|---|
| U11, U13, U15, U17, U19 | A, B and Domestic |
Grades run A, B and Domestic, so there's a clear step between the strongest teams and the more social end of the competition. That's helpful, because a child who isn't enjoying getting beaten every week can move without leaving the association.
Dandenong's representative teams are the Rangers, playing against other associations rather than inside the local competition. Rep requires a tryout, generally held around October for the following season, and a much bigger weekly commitment than domestic.
Domestic is open entry, so you join a club inside the association rather than trying out. Given the number of teams, there's usually room somewhere in your child's age group.
If you're not sure which grade suits, ask to start in Domestic grade rather than A. It's far easier to move a child up mid season than to rebuild their confidence after a term of heavy losses.
