Keilor Basketball Association, or KBA, is one of the bigger associations in Melbourne's west. Its representative teams, junior and senior, all carry the Keilor Thunder name.
The association has been based at Keilor Stadium on Stadium Drive in Keilor Park since 1986. The venue was rebuilt and upgraded in partnership with Brimbank City Council and now has six regulation size courts with capacity for a crowd of more than 2,000.
KBA runs both a domestic program and a representative program. The domestic side is the community competition anyone can join. The representative side is the Thunder, which is selected at tryouts.
Junior domestic at Keilor is a weekend competition administered by the association, and it caters for boys and girls of any skill level from Under 8s to Under 20s.
There are two seasons a year. The summer competition runs October to March and the winter competition runs April to September. Each season is roughly 17 weeks including a finals series, with medals or trophies for grand finalists.
Every age group is split into multiple grades based on skill, labelled alphabetically with A as the top grade. That grading is the single most useful thing about a big domestic competition. A beginner is not thrown in against a team of rep kids.
Age groups are set by year of birth rather than school year, and the association publishes the exact birth years for each season. Check that list before you assume which age group your child belongs in, because it moves each season.
You join Keilor domestic through one of the association's affiliated clubs, not through the association. Contact a club directly and they will place your child in a team.
Worth knowing before you start counting: the association's own pages give different numbers for how many domestic clubs it has. One page says 10, the same page then refers to 11, and the about page says 13. That is a normal website drift rather than anything sinister, but it means the current club contact list on the site is the only version worth trusting.
Clubs run their own training, usually one night a week, and set their own registration and uniform fees. On top of that sits a Basketball Victoria participant licence, which is charged separately at registration.
For very young children there is Mini Thunder, a beginners program for five to eight year olds, and an Under 8s competition for those ready to play games.
The Thunder representative program is large. The association describes more than 40 junior male and female teams, which puts it among the biggest rep programs in Melbourne's west.
Junior Thunder teams play in the VJBL on Friday nights. Tryout dates are published on the association's site each year, and there is a separate set of September sessions for players new to representative basketball ahead of the main trials.
Above the juniors, Keilor fields Big V Youth League men's and women's teams and NBL1 men's and women's teams. The Thunder women won the 2026 Big V Youth League championship, which gives the older juniors something visible to aim at.
The association also runs bridging programs, including a Domestic Academy and a Rep Ready program, for kids who want more than domestic but are not ready to commit to a rep season.
New to basketball and under nine: start with Mini Thunder, then the Under 8s competition.
Ready for a team: pick a club from the association's junior club contact list and email them with your child's date of birth and rough experience level. Clubs are used to placing new players and will tell you honestly if they have a spot.
Chasing rep: register through the association's tryout portal. Tryout registration and session timetables are published on the site each year in the lead up to October.
Whatever you do, get the current fees from the club and the association directly. They change every season and no third party guide is a safe source for a number you are about to pay.
Keilor Stadium carries most of the load, but it is not the only building the association uses. Domestic games are fixtured across a venue list that the association publishes each season alongside the fixture itself.
The senior competition expanded to a second venue for winter 2026, at the Copperfield College Community Hub on Calder Park Drive in Sydenham, for Monday and Wednesday nights. If an older sibling or a parent is playing, their game may not be at Keilor Park at all.
The practical advice is the same at every association. Check the venue on the fixture the night before rather than driving on autopilot to the stadium you went to last week. It is the cheapest mistake to avoid and the most common one to make.
