Doncaster Basketball is a club rather than an association that hosts its own competition. Its junior domestic teams, the Doncats, play in the EDJBA plus a midweek MEBA competition, while its representative teams, the Panthers, enter the VJBL directly on Friday nights. The club is based at the Leeds Street Sports Centre in Doncaster East.

Doncaster Basketball Club runs junior and senior basketball out of Melbourne's inner east, and it sits under a parent body called the Doncaster District Community Youth Club. That is the incorporated entity behind the club, which is why you will sometimes see DDCYC on paperwork.
The distinction matters the moment you start searching. Doncaster is a club that enters teams into other people's competitions, not an association that runs its own Saturday fixture. It still enters the VJBL directly, and Basketball Victoria lists Doncaster Basketball among the groups holding VJBL tryouts, so a Doncaster kid can get all the way to Friday night rep without leaving the club.
Two names get used constantly and they are not the same thing. Doncats are the domestic teams. Panthers are the representative teams. If someone tells you their child plays for Doncaster, that is the first question to ask.
Junior domestic teams play as the Doncats in the EDJBA, the Eastern Districts Junior Basketball Association, which fixtures clubs from across a wide slice of eastern Melbourne.
The club enters boys and girls from age 5 through to 20. Players are assessed and placed in a team that suits their level, and the club is clear that it takes beginners as well as experienced players.
The year splits into two seasons. Summer runs from October to March across school terms 4 and 1. Winter runs April to September across terms 2 and 3. That gives you two natural entry points a year rather than one annual sign-up window you can miss.
There is a second domestic option as well. Doncats teams also play in the MEBA midweek junior competition. If your Saturdays are already committed to another sport, ask about that one before you rule basketball out.
The representative program plays as the Doncaster Panthers in the VJBL, Victoria's Friday night junior rep competition. The club lists age groups from Under 12 through Under 18, and for the 2027 season it is also running Under 20 boys tryouts.
Teams are chosen at tryouts rather than by open entry, and tryout registration is linked from the club's own VJBL page.
The club is honest about what rep means. Its VJBL page tells parents plainly that minutes at representative level are not shared out evenly across a squad. If your child is used to a domestic coach rotating everyone equally, that is the change worth preparing them for before tryouts, not after.
The VJBL is tiered. Victorian Championship sits at the top, then numbered Victorian Junior League divisions, and from the 2025/26 season a third tier called Regional League, organised into geographic pools to cut travel. Which tier a Doncaster team lands in comes out of grading, not out of anything the club decides.
The club's home is the Leeds Street Sports Centre at 12 Leeds Street, Doncaster East. That is where the office sits and where most club business happens.
Senior domestic runs at Manningham DISC in Donvale, a short drive away. A family with a junior playing and an adult playing can therefore end up at two different venues in the same week.
EDJBA games are fixtured across the competition's venues, not only at Leeds Street. Expect to travel to other clubs' home courts most weeks, which is normal for every EDJBA family, not a Doncaster quirk.
For a genuine first-timer, Mini Dribblers is the club's entry program, aimed at young kids learning the basics before they play in a fixture.
For domestic, you register through the club for the season you want. Registration opens well before each season starts and the club publishes an information booklet with every intake, which is the document to actually read rather than skim.
For rep, the path is a tryout, and the club asks prospective Panthers to make contact through its VJBL page rather than turning up cold on the night.
Fees change every season and differ by program, so get the current number from the club itself rather than from any guide, this one included.
Doncaster Panthers tryout registrations for the 2027 VJBL season closed on Sunday 27 September 2026. The club's VJBL page does not list the Under 12 to Under 18 session dates, but it notes that sessions 3 or 4 are generally invite only.
Successful athletes in Under 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s will receive an email by Monday 12 October containing a Team Selection Offer and a PlayHQ registration link. A place is only confirmed once the offer has been accepted, registration has been completed via PlayHQ and payment has been made in full.
The registration fee for the 2026/2027 season is $725 per athlete, and payment is due by 5pm Monday 12 October 2026. That is the same day the offer emails are due, so the gap between offer and payment may be short. Have the payment ready and watch your email closely. The uniform shop opens for VJBL fittings on Sunday 18 October at Leeds Street.
Doncaster has not published a feedback policy or anything about what happens for players who miss out. Its Ready For Rep program ran before tryouts, from 12 July to 13 September.
Under 20 boys try out on Sunday 18 October at Leeds Street and Wednesday 21 October, 8.30pm to 10pm, at Doncaster Secondary College, with team offers sent by Sunday 25 October. The first session's time is printed as "9pm -10.30am", which looks like a typo, so confirm it with the club. No Under 20 girls information is published. A domestic season is one game a week plus one training. Across roughly two seasons a year, that is the smallest version of junior basketball on offer and it is where almost every child should start.
The Panthers are a different proposition entirely. Representative basketball generally means two trainings and a Friday night game through the season, a grading period before that, and tournaments scattered through the year. For most of the calendar it is three fixed commitments a week.
The midweek MEBA option deserves a mention here too. For a family already stretched on Saturdays by another sport, a midweek fixture can be the difference between your child playing basketball and not playing at all.
It is a club, operating under the Doncaster District Community Youth Club. It does not host its own domestic competition. It enters domestic teams into the EDJBA and MEBA, and enters representative teams into the VJBL.
