Warrandyte Basketball Association Inc sits in Melbourne's outer east. It's one of the 22 member clubs of the EDJBA, so its junior domestic teams play in that Saturday competition.
Two names get used and it confuses newcomers. Redbacks is the name you see in EDJBA junior domestic and senior competition. Venom is the name on the representative teams in the VJBL.
If your child is playing Saturday domestic in the EDJBA, they're a Redback. If they make a representative team playing Friday nights in the VJBL, they're in the Venom. Same association, different competitions.
Warrandyte's VJBL teams are named with a number pattern that looks cryptic until someone explains it. Teams appear as things like 12.1 Venom Girls, 14.3 Venom Boys or 18.2 Venom Boys.
The first number is the age group, so 12 is Under 12 and 18 is Under 18. The second number is which team within that age group, so 14.3 is the third Under 14 boys team. A lower second number generally means a higher graded team.
This numbering is used across the VJBL, not just at Warrandyte, so it's worth learning once.
Warrandyte releases its representative tryout dates through PlayHQ, which is the platform most Victorian basketball uses for registration and fixtures.
If you're watching for tryouts, check PlayHQ rather than waiting for an email, because dates go up there first.
