Geelong United Basketball is the association formed when Basketball Geelong and the Corio Bay Stingrays joined forces, and it now runs everything from an 18 club community competition to VJBL, Big V, NBL1 and the WNBL. Its main venue is Beyond Bank Stadium at Belmont, with games spread across venues around the Geelong region.

Geelong United Basketball, usually GUB, is the result of a merger. Basketball Geelong and the Corio Bay Stingrays joined forces in 2019, bringing together two large associations that had operated separately in the region for a long time.
The rebrand took years to finish. The association announced the brand transition as complete in 2024, at which point every team from VJBL Under 12s through Big V Youth League and NBL1 carried the Geelong United name. The Supercats name, long attached to the region's senior men, was retired from the NBL1 team at that point.
One more name to keep straight. The association's WNBL team rebranded again ahead of the 2025/26 season and now plays as the Geelong Venom. Juniors still play as Geelong United, so a Venom reference is about the professional women's team, not your child's pathway.
The association describes itself as one of the largest in Victoria and in Australia, and says it is pushing towards 1,000 community teams and more than 500 pathways players.
The local competition, which is what most Victorian parents would call domestic, is the Community Club Competition. It is made up of 18 member clubs playing each other from Under 8s up to open men's and women's championship divisions.
Games are played Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. That is a broader spread than metropolitan Melbourne associations, and it is a consequence of fitting a very large competition into a regional venue network.
The catchment is wide, running from Lara in the north to Leopold in the east and taking in the Surf Coast and the Golden Plains. Which club you join is largely a question of where you live and which venue you can get to on a weeknight.
Clubs are run by volunteers and each handles its own teams and training. To join, you pick a club from the association's community clubs list and contact that club directly.
The association's main office and primary venue is Beyond Bank Stadium at 20 Crows Road, Belmont. The office is open Monday to Friday and that is where most association business happens.
Beyond that, GUB uses The Geelong Arena at 110 Victoria Street, North Geelong, Try Boys Basketball Stadium at 501 Ryrie Street, East Geelong, and the Leisuretime Sports Precinct on Anakie Road at Norlane.
School and community venues fill out the rest: Grovedale College, Oberon High School at Armstrong Creek, AthletIQ in South Geelong, Bannockburn Recreation Centre and Sacred Heart College at Newtown.
The association notes that most of those venues are only staffed when competition is being played, so do not turn up to a school gym expecting an office. Anything administrative goes through Beyond Bank Stadium.
Geelong United enters more than 50 teams in the VJBL, in Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 age groups determined by year of birth. Games are played on Friday evenings at venues across Victoria.
There is also an Under 20 division that the association describes as having a shorter season and less travel than the main VJBL program. For a regional family, that is a meaningful difference and worth asking about specifically.
Teams train weekly on Sundays, with each team allocated its own time by the club. That single training day is a regional adaptation and it is quite different from the two weeknight sessions a Melbourne association would run.
Tryouts are held in October, with a pre tryout window in September for some new players. You must be registered online before you attend, not on the day.
Geelong United has published nothing past round 1 of its 2026/27 VJBL tryouts. Its VJBL page lists girls' sessions on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October and boys' sessions on Friday 2, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October. No call-back or final sessions after Sunday 4 October are published, and the association's weekly update of 5 October 2026 has no tryout news beyond Under 20 registrations.
Boys who had not played VJBL before in the Under 14s, 16s or 18s had to attend a pre-tryout on 6 September at Beyond Bank Stadium first. Geelong United has not published how or when teams will be announced, an acceptance deadline or 2026/27 fees. Watch your email and the association's VJBL page, and contact the association directly if you have not heard anything.
The association is upfront that not every player gets a spot: depending on trial list numbers and team numbers, people may miss out. Nothing is published about feedback or programs for players who miss out. Basketball Victoria's Rules of Operation allow a player excluded from all of an association's teams before round one of Grading Phase One to apply for eligibility at a new association.
Under 20 tryouts are on Sunday 22 November, boys from 9:00am to 11:00am and girls from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Every association's official tryouts page is collected in one list on our tryouts guide, checked on 11 October 2026.
The community club competition keeps you local. The VJBL does not. Friday night games are played across metropolitan and regional Victoria, so a Geelong rep family will do far more driving than a Melbourne one.
That is exactly the problem Basketball Victoria's VJBL restructure was aiming at. The third tier of the VJBL is now Regional League, organised into geographic pools specifically to cut travel, and it has a grading phase that the earlier regional pilot did not.
Before committing to rep, work out honestly what a Friday night in Melbourne looks like for your household across a whole season, including the trip home. Plenty of strong regional juniors get more out of a good community competition plus the Under 20 pathway later.
The association also runs a long list of programs outside competition, including holiday camps, Aussie Hoops, all abilities and wheelchair basketball, and social competitions. Not every basketball kid needs a rep team to keep improving.
