Who Broadmeadows Basketball are

Broadmeadows Basketball Association, usually shortened to BBA, is the association for basketball across Melbourne's north west growth corridor. Its representative teams are the Broncos.

The association says it has more than 3,500 members and over 340 junior and senior domestic teams playing year round. That makes it a genuinely large operation, and it means the Saturday competition is the main event rather than a sideshow to the rep program.

BBA runs the whole stack. Junior domestic, senior domestic, casual shooting, development academies, an all abilities program and women only programs. For most families, only the first of those matters at the start.

Saturday junior domestic, and who actually organises it

The junior domestic competition is played on Saturdays and is open to girls and boys from Under 8s to Under 19s.

Games are spread across several venues. The association names the Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium, Broadmeadows Leisure Centre and Greenvale Recreation Centre among the sites it uses, along with others depending on how many teams enter. So your Saturday morning destination will change through the season.

Here is the part parents miss. The association runs the fixture, the grading, the court bookings and the referees. It does not put players into teams. That is the club's job, and you have to approach a club directly.

Clubs listed by the association include Dallas Phoenix, Gladstone Park, Somerton All-Stars, TLS at Westmeadows, Greenvale, Oak Park, Roxburgh Park and Strathmore. Each runs its own training, usually one night a week at a local school or venue, and each sets its own fees.

The Broncos and the VJBL

The Broadmeadows Broncos are the association's VJBL teams, playing Friday night representative basketball against other associations across Victoria.

Players are selected through a tryout process, and the association is explicit that the Broncos program is built from athletes already playing in the Broadmeadows domestic competition. In practice that means domestic first, rep second, which is the ordinary path everywhere.

Tryouts for the following season are held in October. The association publishes a tryout schedule and a VJBL information guide each year, and registration goes through PlayHQ.

The commitment is real and BBA states it plainly. Selected players are expected at three compulsory sessions a week during the season, being two trainings and one game. Before you sign up, work out whether three fixed weeknights and Friday travel actually fits your family.

The stadium, and what else runs there

The association is based at Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium, 1 Tanderrum Way, Broadmeadows. The office is open on weekdays and there is a casual shooting window most days, though the association asks you to phone first because availability moves.

The stadium is also home to the association's senior domestic competitions, so on some nights the building is busy with adult basketball rather than juniors.

For younger kids there are entry programs before competition starts, including Mini Broncos and Ford Aussie Hoops. These are the right first step for a five or six year old who has never played, rather than throwing them straight into a graded Saturday team.

How to get started at Broadmeadows

If your child has never played, start with Aussie Hoops or Mini Broncos and let them learn the basics without a scoreboard.

If they are ready to play in a team, pick a junior domestic club from the association's contact list and email that club directly. The association will not place your child for you.

If they are already playing domestic and want rep, register for Broncos tryouts through the association's tryout portal in the lead up to October.

Costs vary by club and by season, and there is a separate Basketball Victoria participant licence on top of club fees. Get both current numbers before you commit, and check whether a Get Active Kids voucher applies to your family.

Coaches, screening and child safety

Every adult coaching or managing a junior team needs a current Working with Children Check. Basketball Victoria publishes child safe standards resources for its affiliated associations and clubs, and points them to the Victorian Working with Children Check requirements, so a club should be able to tell you how it screens the adults around your child.

In day to day terms the questions are simple. Who is coaching my child's team, have they been screened, and who do I raise something with if I am uncomfortable. A club that answers all three without hesitating is telling you something useful.

One thing to be clear about. This guide is not a reporting body and cannot act on a concern for you. Raise anything that worries you with the club and the association directly, and call 000 if a child is in immediate danger.
