Whittlesea Pacers Basketball: a parent's guide

Whittlesea City Basketball Association, known as the Whittlesea Pacers, runs junior and senior domestic competitions out of Mill Park Basketball Stadium. Its representative teams play VJBL from Under 12 through Under 20, and games run on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays.

Who the Whittlesea Pacers are

The official name is Whittlesea City Basketball Association, WCBA, and it operates as Whittlesea Pacers Basketball. The club motto is One Club, One Family.

It plays out of Mill Park Basketball Stadium in Melbourne's north.

Which days your child plays

This is the thing that makes Whittlesea different to most associations, and it's worth knowing before you sign up.

Games are typically held on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays rather than the Saturday most competitions default to. If your weekends are already committed to another sport, that can be a genuine advantage. If you were counting on weeknights being free, it's the opposite.

What they run

Juniors

  • Junior domestic across summer and winter seasons
  • Aussie Hoops, the national developmental program
  • A beginners program
  • Holiday and school term clinics

Representative

  • VJBL from Under 12 through Under 20
  • Big V Division 1 and Youth League for seniors

Seniors and community

  • Senior domestic across summer and winter
  • Walking Basketball

The Autumn Showdown

Whittlesea runs an annual tournament called the Whittlesea Autumn Showdown. Tournaments are a good low commitment way to see whether your child enjoys a higher standard before you commit to a full rep season.

Where they play

Mill Park Basketball Stadium

The association's home venue, on the traditional land of the Wurundjeri People.

How to join

Junior domestic is open entry, so there's no tryout to get your child into a team. Contact the association with your child's age and ask what has room in the current season.

If your child has never played, the beginners program or Aussie Hoops is a better starting point than a graded team. Both are built for children who don't yet know the rules, which removes the worst part of a first season.

If you are aiming at rep

VJBL teams are selected at tryouts rather than by registration, and those generally run around October for a season starting the following March. The Autumn Showdown is a useful way to test whether your child enjoys that standard before committing to it.
