Diamond Valley Basketball Association runs the Northern Junior Basketball League, the NJBL, which takes in twenty clubs across Melbourne's northern region.
It supports more than 5,000 players, which makes it one of the largest junior competitions in Melbourne and in Victoria. If you live north of the city, this is very likely the competition your child will end up in.
Diamond Valley runs even numbered age groups, and the boys and girls brackets differ slightly at the top end.
| Gender | Age groups |
|---|---|
| Girls | U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U19 |
| Boys | U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U18 |
Junior games are played on Saturday.
This is the sort of thing nobody tells you until your child turns up with the wrong ball. Diamond Valley publishes the sizes by age group.
| Ball size | Who uses it |
|---|---|
| Size 5 | U8s through U12s |
| Size 6 | U14s and up for girls, U14s only for boys |
| Size 7 | U16s and U18s boys |
If you're buying a ball for home practice, buy the one they play with. A kid who practises with a size 7 and plays with a size 5 is learning a shot they can't use on Saturday.
44 Civic Drive, Greensborough VIC 3088. The association can be reached on 03 9432 4720 or info@dvbasketball.com.au.
With twenty clubs in the league, the practical question is which one is closest and has room in your child's age group. Contact the association and they will point you at clubs taking players.
Domestic is open entry, so there's no tryout to get into a Saturday team.
