Mornington Basketball: a parent's guide

Mornington District Basketball Association runs junior and senior domestic competitions out of the David Collings Centre, a three court stadium shared with Mornington Secondary College, plus the Breakers representative program in the VJBL and Big V.

Who Mornington Basketball are

Mornington District Basketball Association, MDBA, covers the Mornington area on the Peninsula. It was founded in 1991 and joined the Victorian Basketball Association the following year.

The representative teams are the Breakers, a name the association says reflects its dynamic spirit.

What they run

  • Junior domestic competition across multiple clubs
  • Senior domestic competition
  • Junior Breakers in the VJBL
  • Senior Breakers in Big V
  • Holiday camps and development programs
  • Age groups from grassroots through to Masters

The venue

David Collings Centre

Dunn's Road, Mornington. A three court stadium, run collaboratively with Mornington Secondary College.

Three courts is modest compared to a Dandenong or a Nunawading, which has a practical effect: fixtures are tighter and game times spread further across the day. Check your draw rather than assuming a regular slot.

Seasons and fixtures

Mornington runs winter and summer seasons. Fixtures and detailed schedules are published through PlayHQ, which is the platform most Victorian basketball uses.

If you can't find a draw on the association website, PlayHQ is where it lives.

What your first season actually looks like

The peninsula is spread out, so the first thing worth doing is working out the drive to the venue at the time you'd actually be going. A trip that's twenty minutes on a Sunday is not twenty minutes at six on a weeknight.

Once that's sorted, the season itself is straightforward. Your child gets placed in a team, plays a graded fixture, and trains once a week.

If you're new to it, give it a full season before you judge it. First terms are usually about confidence rather than scoreboard, and most kids look like a different player by the back half of the year.

Who to contact

Mornington publishes separate addresses by area, which is more useful than a single general inbox because your question reaches the right person first time.

How to join

Domestic is open entry, so there's no tryout. Contact the association and ask which domestic club has room in your child's age group.

For the Junior Breakers you need to attend tryouts, generally held around October for the following season.
