Collingwood Basketball: a parent's guide

Collingwood Basketball Association runs junior domestic on Saturdays and junior representative basketball on Fridays, out of Collingwood Stadium on McCutcheon Way. It runs development programs from Little Stars through to Rep Ready.

Who Collingwood Basketball are

Collingwood Basketball Association runs out of Collingwood Stadium in the inner north. It carries the line All Stars, One Community, and the program names follow it through.

For inner city families it's one of the few associations where you're not driving to the suburbs for a Saturday game.

What they run

  • Junior domestic competition on Saturdays, winter and summer seasons
  • Junior representative basketball in the VJBL on Fridays
  • Senior domestic competition
  • Big V senior representative
  • Development programs including Little Stars, Aussie Hoops, J-League, All Stars Academy and Rep Ready
  • Ability Hoops, inclusive basketball

Which day your child plays

Collingwood splits the two clearly, which makes planning easier than at associations where it varies by age group.

If your child plays both, that's a Friday and a Saturday most weeks through the season. Worth counting before you commit to rep.

The development ladder

Collingwood runs a clear progression rather than dropping children straight into graded competition.

What your first season actually looks like

Domestic basketball settles into a rhythm quickly. One training night, one game, and the rest of the week is yours.

Collingwood sits in the inner city, so the biggest practical thing to sort out is parking and the run in from work. Have a look at the venue on a normal weeknight before you commit to a training slot.

Don't worry about your child being behind. Domestic teams are graded, and the first season is mostly about getting comfortable with the ball, the rules and playing in front of people. Skill comes after that, and it comes faster than parents expect.

How to join

Junior domestic is open entry with no tryout, so contact the association with your child's age and ask what has room.

For VJBL you need to attend a tryout. Rep Ready is the program to ask about first if your child isn't there yet.
