The check in lands in the group chat every week. It is three things: here is what to work on, here is what I saw, here is the one thing to fix.
It is deliberately short. A wall of text does not get read by a thirteen year old, and a coaching note that does not get read is not coaching. One clear instruction that actually gets acted on beats a page of analysis that does not.
It is also written to your child rather than about them. They are the one who has to do the work, so the message is aimed at them, in language they will actually use.
A month is long enough to build a habit the wrong way. A player who is grooving a flaw in their shooting form for four weeks has to unlearn four weeks of it.
Weekly is short enough to catch that and long enough for something to actually change. It also builds the rhythm that matters more than any individual drill: turning up, doing the work, getting told what happened, adjusting.
It means there is always something specific to do this week, rather than a vague sense that they should be practising more.
Every check in ends with a single thing to fix. Not five. One.
Coaches give too much feedback. It feels thorough and it is genuinely well meant, but a player cannot hold five corrections in their head while also playing. They end up thinking instead of playing, which makes everything worse.
So the check in picks the thing that is costing them the most right now, and that is the only correction until it is fixed. Then the next one.
