The Nunawading Basketball Centre is in East Burwood Reserve on Burwood Highway, East Burwood 3151, despite the Nunawading name. It has five full sized basketball courts, a cafe and retail store, a car park and wheelchair access. It's the home of the Melbourne East Basketball Association and the Nunawading Spectres.

Start here, because it trips people up every season. The Nunawading Basketball Centre isn't in Nunawading. The association lists it at East Burwood Reserve, Burwood Highway, East Burwood 3151.
The club kept the Nunawading name as it grew and the building went up somewhere else, which is common enough in Melbourne sport. If you type Nunawading into a maps app you'll end up several kilometres north of where you want to be, in the middle of a shopping strip.
Type East Burwood Reserve and look for the reserve. Worth knowing that the official suburb is Burwood East, so if East Burwood doesn't resolve in your maps app, try Burwood East instead. The centre sits inside it.
Burwood Highway is a major road, which makes the centre easy to reach and means you should think about which side of it you're approaching from. Turning across the highway at a busy time is slower than going around.
If you're coming by public transport, the association lists tram 75 and stop number 72, which is a genuinely useful option for older kids getting themselves to training without a parent driving.
The centre lists a car park on site and describes the venue as wheelchair accessible.
There are five full sized basketball courts. Alongside them the centre lists a cafe and a retail store, and conference and function rooms with a bar and a commercial kitchen.
A retail store matters more than it sounds. It means you can buy a mouthguard, a pair of socks or a replacement ball without leaving the building, which saves a trip on a Saturday when something has been forgotten or has fallen apart.
Five courts is a middle sized room. Busy and loud at changeover, but small enough that you can find your child's court from the entrance without a map.
This is the home of the Melbourne East Basketball Association, which runs one of the largest domestic competitions in the country. The association describes 800 teams and more than 7,000 players a week.
The representative program is the Nunawading Spectres, covering junior, senior and elite levels.
Junior domestic runs across three days. Monday is girls Under 8 to Under 19. Friday is boys, Under 8 to Under 19 plus Under 21. Saturday is a mixed Under 8 competition plus boys and girls from Under 9 to Under 19. The Saturday competition runs under the Greater Eastern Basketball Conference banner, which also takes in teams from the Ringwood Basketball Association.
An 800 team competition doesn't fit in five courts, so Nunawading fixtures games across nine venues. The list is Nunawading Basketball Centre in East Burwood, Forest Hill Secondary College in East Burwood, Mullauna Secondary College in Mitcham, The Summit Sports Complex in Forest Hill, The Rings in Ringwood, Knox School in Wantirna South, Brentwood Secondary College in Glen Waverley, Huntingtower School in Mount Waverley and Wesley College in Glen Waverley.
That spread reaches from Ringwood to Glen Waverley, which is a serious drive if you get it wrong. Check the venue code on your fixture each week, not just the time.
The upside of the spread is that some weeks your game will be five minutes from home. The downside is that other weeks it won't be, and you need to find that out on Thursday rather than on Saturday morning.
Nunawading sets age groups by birth year, which is the standard across Victorian junior basketball. For the 2026 and 2027 summer season the association lists Under 8 as born 2019 to 2021, Under 9 as 2018, Under 11 as 2016 to 2017, Under 13 as 2014 to 2015, Under 15 as 2012 to 2013, Under 17 as 2010 to 2011 and Under 19 as 2008 to 2009.
Check your child's birth year against that list before you assume which group they're in. Age groups run on the calendar year, not the school year, which means children in the same class at school are sometimes in different basketball age groups.
For a first season, the Saturday competition is the one most families start with. It's the biggest, it has the most grades, and the mixed Under 8 group is a gentle first step for a child who has never played organised basketball.
